Sumida River Lantern Floating 2026: A Quiet Summer Night in Asakusa

As evening falls, candlelit lanterns begin to drift across the Sumida River, casting warm reflections over the water and creating one of Asakusa’s most atmospheric summer scenes.

The tradition began as a way to remember those who lost their lives in the Great Kanto Earthquake, the Tokyo air raids and water-related accidents. Today, participants also write personal wishes and messages on their lanterns before releasing them onto the river.

【Event Highlights】

・Date and time: Saturday, August 15, 2026. The opening ceremony and first lantern release begin at 6:30 PM, followed by the main lantern floating from 6:45 PM to 8:15 PM.

・Location: Sumida River Terrace near Azumabashi Bridge, Asakusa.

・Join the event: Advance lanterns are available from ¥1,700, while day-of lanterns cost ¥2,000. Quantities are limited, so visitors who wish to participate should check the official information before arriving.

・Stay nearby: The Azumabashi riverfront is around a 15-minute walk from OTHER SPACE Asakusa. You can reach the event and return to the hotel on foot without navigating crowded trains afterward.

・Plan ahead: Crowd-control routes may increase the walking time, so we recommend leaving a little earlier than usual.

・Weather: The event is scheduled to proceed in the rain, although severe weather may affect the program or schedule.
