A mural once filled an entire wall of a small café in Nishi-Asakusa. Painted by kamishibai artist Koji Kata, Asakusa Big Parade brings together entertainers who helped make Asakusa Rokku one of Tokyo’s great popular-entertainment districts.
After the café closed, the mural was donated to Shitamachi Museum. It is now the centrepiece of a special exhibition that also introduces Kata’s street-picture-story works and publications, along with photographs and objects connected to Café Peter, a local gathering place remembered by Asakusa regulars.
For travellers who know Asakusa mainly through Senso-ji and Kaminarimon, the exhibition offers a different view of the neighbourhood: one shaped by theatres, performers, cafés and stories shared by local people.

・Dates: July 7–November 1, 2026.
・Hours: 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; last admission at 4:00 p.m.
・Closed: Mondays, or the following weekday when Monday is a public holiday. September closures are September 7, 14, 24 and 28.
・Location: Special Exhibition Room, 3F, Shitamachi Museum, 2-1 Ueno Park, Taito City.
・Admission: ¥300 for adults and ¥100 for elementary, junior-high and high-school students. Group rates and eligible exemptions are available.
・From OTHER SPACE Asakusa: Take the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line from Asakusa Station to Ueno Station. The museum is approximately a five-minute walk from the Ginza and Hibiya Line exits at Ueno Station.
・Exhibition highlights include the large Asakusa Big Parade mural, Koji Kata’s kamishibai-related materials and memories of Café Peter.
